The Ultimate Barn Find - 1963 Pontiac Tempest

A couple of years ago, I was browsing around in the forum over at Chevelles.Com and a specific thread caught my attention and it read, "The Ultimate Barn Find" so being the old car junky that I am, I had to check this out.

So, I started reading through the post and here is the gist of the story.... A gentleman had recently had a family member pass away and he was cleaning up the home and hauling off scrap. He had his truck bed loaded down with scrap metal and was trying to figure a way to get the "Ole Pontiac" that had been sitting in the garage hooked up to tow away to the shredder however the car had flat tires on it and he was not able to haul it away. So, he elected to just throw the car on eBay and hope for the best. Well, the best is what he got, he started the auction out at $500 because that is what he figured he would have gotten for the car at the scrap yard if could have gotten it down there but within 4 days the bid had climbed to $ 27,500. Turned out this gentleman was sitting on a gold mine, so to speak. He had just stumbled upon was one of six 421 Super Duty aluminum front end Tempests built by Pontiac in 1963 for Super Stock and A/FX drag racing. Needless, to say he was quite surprised seeing how this car was in need of a complete frame off restoration and the original aluminum front end was not with the car. However, a collector in Florida had purchased the front end in 1979 and has been waiting around for the car to surface so he could reunite them. As the auction drew to a close the bids started pouring in for this rare and unique piece of drag racing history, the final bid price for this car was $226,521.63. The car is now in Michigan at a restoration shop being restored back to it original condition. If you would like more details on this story here is a link for you to check out.Pontiac Tempest
